CBSE Schools to go Cashless from January 2017

The Honorable Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi’s move to demonetize Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 currency notes and a call for a cashless economy have witnessed a positive wave from the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE). In an effort to go cashless and contribute to a digital economy, CBSE affiliated schools have opted for digital transactions from January 2017.

The Central Board of Secondary Education has asked its affiliated schools to go cashless in terms of fee collection starting January 1, 2017. The board secretary Mr. Joseph Emmanuel issued a notice to all schools on December 11, 2016, asking them to use cashless mode of payment for collecting the fee. The circular stated, “With a view to reducing cash transactions at school, all CBSE-affiliated schools shall introduce fee collection from students only online or through non-cash mode from the next quarter commencing from January 2017 onward.”

Apart from introducing fee collection through e-payment, Mr. Joseph has also asked schools to use cashless modes of payment for availing various services, procurement, wages to contractual workers and other transactions.

In the letter, the board has quoted the benefits of going cashless for the betterment of the country’s economy. The board has also suggested the schools and principals interact with parents regarding the online payment during parent teacher meeting and create an awareness of cashless transactions.

It can be seen that the demonetization move by the government has been welcomed by the CBSE. Ever since the government has scrapped high-value currency, the board has extended its supporting hand to the parents pertaining to cashless payment. It is evident that the demonetization wave has hit the entire nation leaving a profound negative impact on few, nevertheless, the decision can be seen as a vision to embrace digital economy.

However, the schools choosing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s path to reduce cash transactions can be seen as a beneficial step for both the schools and parents. The online payment or non-cash mode of payment is the need of the hour. With many schools getting integrated with technology, the online payment is an added advantage to the management.
